A driver swerved from behind a car stopped at a crosswalk and hit a 14-year-old girl in Laconia, New Hampshire. Lilyanna Johnson died from her injuries, reported the New Hampshire Union Leader (4.20.13). Her friend, Alyssa Miner, also 14, was in serious condition following the auto accident.

"Sadly, it seems that no street is entirely safe for pedestrians,” said New Hampshire personal injury lawyer John Tenn of Tenn And Tenn, P.A..

The girls were crossing the street when the car driven by fifty-one-year-old Amy Lafond "suddenly veered" from behind a stopped car and hit Johnson, a guardrail and Miner. Lafond stopped after hitting a guardrail on the other side of the street, stated in the Union Leader article (4.20.13).

“If a legal claim is filed, the first step will be to establish the driver’s fault for the collision. This driver will likely find herself facing a wrongful death suit if she’s found at fault for the death of this girl,” said Tenn.

“Compensation is important even if it is often seen as cold comfort for those who have lost a loved one. Financial compensation will never replace a lost loved one, but it can help a family get back on track. ” Tenn added.

Crosswalks accounted for close to 9 percent of all pedestrian fatalities, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Commission report on pedestrian crash deaths and injuries based on nationwide statistics collected from 1997 to 2006. Across the U.S., 471 pedestrians were killed in crosswalks in 2006.
