Ottumwa, IA (PRWEB) May 04, 2013
Thomas Shafer, an insurance agent, was nominated this year for his numerous community contributions. Shafer is known around town for giving back and has lived in the Ottumwa community for the last 33 years, raising his children there and starting his own insurance business.
Shafer’s involvement in the community includes serving on the boards for Habitat for Humanity, American Homefinding and Komen’s Race for the Cure. He has served as president of the local Kiwanis Club, as well. With a degree in education, Shafer also spends quite a lot of time teaching classes at the local schools, including the Junior Achievement classes and the insurance portion of every Ottumwa driver’s education class.
Shafer said, “I wouldn't be able to do all of this if I didn't have support from my wife and family, my church and the people at my office. Without that support, I couldn't get out there to help the community as much as I want to.”
The next big community event for Tom Shafer is the Komen Southeast Iowa Race for the Cure® which will take place on May 11th at Greater Ottumwa Park. As the director of the event, Shafer is encouraging the community to come out and support breast cancer awareness. People can register for the event on the Komen Southeast Iowa Race for the Cure® website.
