The Art & History Museums – Maitland(A&H) presents two exhibitions highlighting works of André Smith(1880-1959), noted artist, architect, author, and founder of the A&H’s Maitland Art Center. The exhibitions begin on May 31, 2013 in the A&H’s Maitland Art Center Galleries, 231 W. Packwood Avenue, Maitland. An Opening Reception is held on May 31 from 6 to 8 PM. André Smith: Picturing Place presents highlights from the A&H’s holdings of prints, paintings, and drawings reflecting Smith’s travels in the United States and Europe. After receiving his degree in architecture from Cornell University, Smith ventured to Europe on a Traveling Fellowship to study. He returned to France during World War I, having been appointed by the U.S. government to record the activities of American Expeditionary Forces. Upon his return from the war, Smith settled in Stony Creek, CT and wintered in Maitland, FL. He continued to travel to Europe, where some of his most memorable etchings were completed. His etchings frequently reflected the influence of his architectural studies, illustrating an innate appreciation for the pictorial characteristics of common vistas.
Selections from the Permanent Collection: André Smith Sketch Books features a display of Smith’s sketchbooks dating from the 1920s through 1940s. The sketchbooks are comprised mostly of small, intimate watercolors and crayon sketches depicting a wide range of subject matter, experimentation and dedication to vision.
Gallery hours are Tuesday – Sunday, 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM. Admission is $3.00 for adults; $2.00 for seniors (55 & older) and for children (4-18 years). A&H Members and children (3 & under) are free.
