The 5 best GPS watches for 2013 had to be revised by the Heart Rate Watch Company to accommodate the new Suunto Ambit 2, the uber watch of 2013.
"The Suunto Ambit 2 Sapphire is so cool that it sold out in one day and now we won't have any until early July," says Rusty Squire, President of the Heart Rate Watch Company. He adds, "It was the most rugged, coolest looking watch I've ever seen."
SUUNTO AMBIT 2 BLACK & SILVER
The Suunto Ambit 2 black and silver have all the same features as the Ambit Sapphire according to Squire. "Features-wise these two watches are identical, all the apps more memory than Ambit 1, it is simply the crystal and cosmetic differences on Ambit 2 Sapphire," says Squire. He adds, "The Ambit 2, which is identical construction material to Ambit 1, was absolutely bomb proof in our testing as John Yarington crushed an Ambit 1 on lava and just a small scratch resulted."
"It is an extra $100 for the Sapphire and the new Ambit 2 in black or silver will deliver all the same features," says Squire.
HERE IS THE NEW TOP 5 FOR 2013
#1 - Suunto Ambit 2 Sapphire kicks everything else, more apps, tougher construction, navigation, barometric altimeter, better sports features including new swim features.
#2 - Suunto Ambit 2 - It has everything the Ambit Sapphire does, just not the cool bezel and extra thick crystal but your wrist will probably break before the crystal does - no lie.
#3 - Garmin Forerunner 910XT - It might be our token triathlon watch and we put it above the Suunto Ambit 2S, but barely. Garmin is going to have to keep up with Suunto on construction quality and initial release features.
#4 - Suunto Ambit 2S - Nipping at Garmin 910XT's heels Suunto is literally starting to dominate a market that Garmin once owned. The reason is they are moving faster to let the customer be in charge and build their own apps.
#5 - Garmin Forerunner 610 - It is still the best running watch bar none unless your are an ultra marathoner, plus it also makes a super cycling watch.
"The Suunto Ambit 2 really shakes up the top 5 for this year which is why we really felt compelled to re-release out top 5," says Squire. He adds, "We are one of the only companies in the industry that actually tests the products in depth here in the mountains of Montana, most of our competitors don't even use the product."
"We had to drop the Garmin fenix as there have been too many issues with warranty and moisture," says Squire. He adds, "I'm confident the next version will get it right but version one has had some warranty and moisture issues."
