Estate of Dollar General Heiress, Philanthropist to Sell at Two Auctions

Katherine Elizabeth Turner Campbell – “Betty” to everyone who knew her – was the third child born to Cal and Laura Turner. Her dad, together with his father, J.L. Turner, started a little dry goods business in Scottsville, Ky., which ultimately would become the Dollar General Corporation.

After her son, Warren, was diagnosed with cancer, she founded Center for Courageous Kids, a $20 million facility providing free camping experiences for medically challenged children, on a tract of land that was once part of her father’s Allen County farm. For her contributions to charities throughout the South – particularly those benefitting the elderly and the young – Betty was recognized as one of Scottville’s Citizens of the Year, placing a bronze likeness of her alongside that of her father in the town square.

After Betty’s unexpected passing in 2011, the trustees of her estate have decided to sell her Kentucky estate and cattle farmland at auction. United Country – Heartland Realty & Auction of Bowling Green, Ky., will sell these properties to the highest bidder during two auction events on Friday, June 14 and Saturday, June 15.

The first event will begin at 1 p.m. on June 14 and will feature a roughly 5,500-square-foot residence on approximately 80 acres in Scottsville, Ky. This home offers a basement, gourmet kitchen, an elevator, four bedrooms, four bathrooms, formal rooms, a diesel generator, four HVAC systems, an attached three-car garage, a detached three-bay garage, and front and rear porch areas. Additionally, this property includes a log cabin with about 4,000 square feet of living space, two bedrooms, two-and-a-half bathrooms, a loft, full basement, built-in gun safe, two-car garage and three-bay carport with apartment above.

The second event is a multi-tract auction starting at 10 a.m. on June 15. It will feature over 165 acres of cattle farmland offered in seven separate tracts, combinations of parcels or in its entirety. This rural real estate – located on the outskirts of Scottsville – features a boundary creek, three ponds, three ingress/egress points, fencing, excellent hay production, gently rolling surroundings, open grass lands and some woodlands.
