On May 13, fishbat, one of the nation’s leading social media agencies, discusses the social media influence in increasing tourism as outlined in an article by News Limited.
According to an article published on News Limited, Hamilton Island of Queensland Australia is partnering up with QQ.com, the largest Chinese social media site, to increase Chinese tourism to Australia. In the article, Hamilton Island spokesperson Sophie Baker says, “China probably has more social media users than Facebook has worldwide - with China's social media market nearly at one billion users.”
The article says the Chinese contributed about $4.2 billion dollars to the Australian economy in 2012, largely due to tourism. This partnership serves as a gauge of how far social media has come along in marketing.
Justin Maas, the VP of client relations at fishbat says, “As social media increases, so does the potential of growth for businesses and economies worldwide.”
Social media connects many people from many walks of life and presents an opportunity to always be exposed to something from continents away, Maas explains. “We document our travels and experiences through social media. Sharing the photo of a beautiful location can inspire others to want to have the same experience, if not better. Our actions on social media could motivate others to do similar things, like travel.”
Maas says the positive relationship between social media and tourism is good news for social media agencies. "As long as people share pictures and videos detailing their vacations, there will be a strong marketing need for social media agencies. A Country which is looking to appeal to tourists could benefit from applying social media to their marketing campaign. Posting videos of tours or photos of local attractions on social media websites will contribute to the growth of social media marketing and economies alike."
