Bohemia, NY (PRWEB) May 11, 2013

On May 11, social media agency fishbat urges Long Islanders to participate in Island Harvest’s “Stamp Out Hunger” event today.

Today, Long Island food bank Island Harvest, along with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) and the United States Postal Service (USPS), will be collecting food to “Stamp Out Hunger.” As part of the nation’s largest one-day food drive, Island Harvest and the USPS are asking Long Island residents to non-perishable food items in their mailbox. Mail carriers will collect the items and deliver them to Island Harvest to be shipped to organizations in need of food assistance.

Clay Darrohn, the CEO of fishbat, says there are over 300,000 people suffering from hunger on Long Island, including children. There are also approximately 70,000 people that rely on soup kitchens or food pantries for food.

“fishbat will be at the event, helping Island Harvest collect and sort food to be shipped to organizations in need of support,” he says. “We’re excited to give back to our community and look forward to making this event a real success. We definitely encourage people to look through their cabinets and donate any unwanted or unused food. We all have cans of food that we don’t need, so why not donate it to someone who does?”

Darrohn says all of the items collected will be donated to 570 community-based organizations on Long Island in need of food support. “It’s an easy task and we think that it's a great way for people to support their community,” Darrohn says. “All you have to do is leave non-perishable food items in your mailbox and your mail carrier will do the rest. With help from the public, I’m sure we can combat hunger and save lives.”

The event will take place at 4 p.m. at the Island Harvest Headquarters in Hauppauge, NY. “Last year, I think there was about 430,000 pounds of food collected,” Darrohn says. “I think we have a good shot at hitting at least 450,000 pounds this year.”
