Calling all lovers of tequila, Altamar Brands and The Bon Vivants kicked off the regional semi-finals of the third annual Viva Sangrita, Viva Tequila Ocho National Championship in the Northeast. The competition commenced Sunday, May 12 in Boston with the next stop on Tuesday, May 14 in New York City.

In April, over 170 contestants submitted recipes for the chance to compete in one of 8 regional competitions, and ultimately, for a chance to win the coveted VIVA SANGRITA VIVA TEQUILA OCHO National Title at "Tales of the Cocktail" in New Orleans this July.

On Sunday, May 12, the Boston Semi-finals occurred at Drink. Boston semi-finalists consisted of Jess Li, Sean Frederick, David Delaney, and Nick Korn of Citizen Public House and Oyster Bar as well as Ezra Star of Drink, John Henderson of Tavern Road, and Sophie Gees of Lone Star Taco Bar. Ezra Star with her “Sangrita de Alga” was crowned the Boston champion and will be competing in the Viva Sangrita, Viva Tequila Ocho finals this July in New Orleans.

On Tuesday, May 14, seven of New York’s finest spirit epicureans will square off in the Viva Sangrita Tequila Ocho New York City Semi-Finals at Evelyn located at 171 Avenue C. The event occurs from 5 to 7:30 pm. New York semi-finalists consist of Phillip Kirschen-Clark, Lynnette Marrero, Josh Wortman, Brad Farran, Shannon Ponche, Christian Sanders, and J Rosser Lomax. Come out and choose your favorite Sangrita!

"Sangrita", Spanish for little blood, is the traditional Jaliscan accompaniment to tequila. In its most traditional form, it is a pomegranate or tomato base, mixed with citrus juice and a spicy kick. Sangrita brings out the complexity of agave flavors in fine tequilas and transcends traditional drinking experiences. Sangrita perfectly complements Tequila Ocho.
