Palo Alto, CA (PRWEB) May 17, 2013
Sofia University (formerly Institute of Transpersonal Psychology) held an event on May 2, 2013 titled, “Psychedelic Experience: Healing, Growth and Discovery” at Sofia University in Palo Alto while simultaneously video streaming it live online at http://www.livestream.com/sofiauniversity. Brad Burge, Communications Director for the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), served as interviewer.
The evening consisted of dialogue between Fadiman and Burge, as well as Q&A with the audience. Both speakers reflected on current results and new research opportunities in psychedelics, including discoveries in neuroscience, long-term effects of ongoing use, and work done in indigenous settings. The dialogue included new applications of psychedelics for chronic sleep disturbances, severe lifelong allergies, academic test-taking, neuromuscular improvements and successful withdrawal from antidepressants. The effects of micro-dosing, as well as experiments in accelerated scientific problem-solving were also discussed.
Fadiman, who was instrumental in founding Sofia University in 1975, co-teaches its courses on psychedelic research and clinical issues. The class covers clinical research on psychedelic drugs as adjuncts to psychotherapy for the treatment of addiction, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and existential distress at the end of life, as well as how to address psychedelic experiences that clients bring into psychotherapy.
Often referenced as the authority on psychedelic studies, Fadiman has been featured in The Wall Street Journal and has presented at numerous psychedelic science conferences, including the MAPS Psychedelic Science Conference 2013.
