Coco’s Closet Introduces NoTimeForCancer Line of Merchandise in Support of Cancer Patients

Inspired by Coco’s Closet owner’s own battle with cancer, the merchandise follows a new attitude toward cancer evidenced by announcements by celebrities like Angelina Jolie and CNN’s Zoraida Sambolin about their own cancer decisions.

When businesswoman Carolyn Akel, owner of Coco’s Closet, fought and won a battle with cancer last year. Her mantra to friends and family was “I have no time for cancer.” This year she’s supporting other cancer fighters with the sale of a new line of NoTimeForCancer merchandise with a portion of proceeds going to The Child Cancer Fund, Coco’s Closet representatives announced today.

As the recent announcement of celebrity Angelina Jolie’s preventative double mastectomy shows, people are taking a more proactive approach toward cancer. Dr. Mehmet Oz of the Dr. Oz show recently applauded Jolie’s decision saying that it has helped changed the future of cancer and how cancer prevention is perceived. Already Jolie’s announcement gave CNN’s Zoraida Sambolin the courage to talk about her own struggle with breast cancer and subsequent decision to opt for double mastectomy.

Coco’s Closet owner Akel, who is also the CEO of Akel Ventures, said changing attitudes toward the disease is a powerful first step toward creating more cancer survivors.

“Attitude is everything. If we talk about it, more people will be willing to broach the subject with their doctors. If we are open about our fight then more people with the diagnosis will be willing to fight. I think when celebrities like Angelia Jolie and Zoraida Sambolin speak out about these very personal, very scary issues people listen and attitudes change,” Akel said.

Akel hopes to add to the discussion with her line of NoTimeForCancer merchandise.

When Akel fought her own battle against thyroid last year she wasn’t going to let it stop her. With a thriving and quickly expanding business Akel didn’t have the time to slow down. She hopes her mantra then will become inspiration for others now.

“At first I meant it as a way to respond to others who were concerned for me. Then over time, it became a mantra -- I have ‘no time for cancer’ I have ‘time for life.’ This is my way of honoring that spirit,” Akel said.

The line of NoTimeForCancer merchandise includes T-shirts and bags with the NoTimeForCancer phrase. T-shirts come in pink with pink, white with pink and charcoal with black. A portion of the proceeds will go toward The Child Cancer Fund, which assists parents, health care providers and caregivers of children with cancers in Jacksonville, Fla.
