Several studies have been conducted regarding the bias that exists against people who are overweight. They’ve covered areas in the workforce as well as situations on a social level. However, a new study has found that medical students are likely to unknowingly have that same anti-obesity bias, suggesting that weight loss via supplements such as Liproxenol may inadvertently increase a person’s chances of proper medical care.
In a study published by Academic Medicine, the Journal of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), researchers looked at 354 medical students who were in their third year at Wake Forest School of Medicine. This next generation of doctors completed the Weight Implicit Association Test (IAT), which is a measure that reveals whether a person prefers individuals who are “fat” or “thin”.
In addition to the IAT, the students also answered a questionnaire about their known biases. Researchers then compared the results of the two to see how well the students recognized their own prejudices.
Of the 354 students, 310 agreed to take part in the study. Of those, 33% were found to have a self-recognized “moderate” or “strong” bias against obese individuals and none of them admitted to being biased against people who are thin.
However, the IAT test scores showed very different results. They discovered that 39% of the students were subconsciously anti-obese and 17% were anti-thin. This means that statistically, 67% of the participants were unaware of their bias.
This study suggests that future doctors need to become more aware of their bias so as not to unknowingly discriminate against their patients based on their weight. It also suggests that people who lose weight, via supplements such as Liproxenol, may inadvertently receive better medical care because of it.
Liproxenol is a weight loss supplement that contains all natural ingredients such as green tea, vitamin B6, cayenne powder and dandelion root. It was created by Liproxenol Nutraceuticals to increase metabolism, decrease appetite and burn excess fat.
