Natchitoches, LA (PRWEB) June 12, 2013
Louisiana is no stranger to hurricane season. Although the official start this year was marked by June 1, the threat of a hurricane is a worry residents will not soon forget. With storms such as Isaac, Rita and Katrina being just a few of many that have brought devastation to the state, preparedness is imperative. This year, The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts that hurricane season will be above-average, with as many as eleven hurricanes possible, reports Raycom News Network.
Warmer than average temperatures are just one of the factors that NOAA contributes to the increased threat this year’s hurricane season poses. In Louisiana, federal and state officials are urging residents to be prepared. At the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness, the theme is to “Get a Game Plan”. Residents can download the app in iTunes, or learn more information about severe weather preparedness online.
At Cunningham Insurance, the local insurance agents recall all too well the devastation that major storms have brought to homeowners in Louisiana over the years. This is exactly why they urge residents to prepare now, as storms can hit fast.
Here is what the local agency recommends:
1. Create an emergency kit: This should include at least three-days of water and food, a change of clothing, a battery powered radio, a first aid kit, a flashlight, batteries, an extra set of car keys and paper and pencil.
2. Store important family documents in a waterproof container: In the event of flooding, homeowners will want to have on hand important family documents such as birth certificates, social security cards, and homeowners insurance information.
3. Think of the pets, too: Remember that family pets could be without food, too. Store extra food and water for them, too!
In the unfortunate event that a major storm is predicted, it is important to pay attention to weather updates. Storms can move from minor to severe to major quickly. NOAA predicts that there is a 96% chance that any hurricane of any strength will hit. In the United States, there is a 72% chance that one of those hurricanes will make landfall. This means that the start of hurricane season is the time to prepare. Families are encouraged to talk out an emergency plan and understand where to meet if people are separated when a storm hits.
Once the storm is over, Cunningham Financial Group encourages homeowners to take photos immediately and contact their homeowners insurance carrier if there are any damages. The sooner claims are made, the faster repairs can be made and life can return to normal. Homeowners with questions about their homeowners insurance are encouraged to give the local agents a call today.
