Apple Unveil Offers New Marketing Channel

Apple unveiled overhauled operating systems and a brand new iTunes Radio service this week. Online marketing expert Jason Hennessey says the ad-driven radio offers marketers an enticing new platform.

Apple unveiled a slew of overhauls Monday, including a completely revamped iOS 7 and a new streaming radio service. Internet marketing expert Jason Hennessey says the reveal has wide implications for the future of online advertising.

Apple made the announcement at its annual software development conference. iOS 7, the operating system for the iPhone and iPad, grabbed much of the attention at the conference, allowing users to swipe seamlessly between apps and offering a control center that shows every active app. But the item that caught Hennessey's attention is the new iTunes Radio service.

iTunes Radio will now come built into iTunes on most devices, allowing them to stream stations based on their music preferences. Users can upgrade to an ad-free service for $25 per year, but many are expected to stay with the free version – which is supported by ads.

“This is a huge change in how marketers can reach iPhone users,” said Hennessey, the co-founder of Everspark Interactive, a leading Atlanta SEO company. “Previously, the iPhone was essentially an ad-free device unless users chose to use ad-driven apps or websites. Now every iPhone includes an attractive ad-based app out of the gate.”

Hennessey says that this gives iTunes Radio an edge on other streaming radio services, like competitor Pandora.

“In order to use Pandora, you have to know about it and decide to install the app, but anyone playing around with a new iPhone is going to fire up iTunes,” he said. “Since the service comes embedded in the device, iTunes' advertisers reach a huge audience.”

Hennessey was careful to point out that this is by no means game changing, but it does offer online advertisers a promising new channel.

“Apple users are widely seen as the digital trendsetters,” he said, “iTunes Radio lets advertisers tap right in.”
