Surface Mount Technology Association (SMTA) is a well-recognized international network of professionals from various industries and disciplines dedicated to the advancement of education, skills, and innovative solutions in electronic assembly technologies. The University of Maryland’s Center for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering (CALCE) is a leader in accelerated testing, electronic parts selection and management, supply chain management, and the development and implementation of physics-of-failure approaches for reliability and international standards for critical electronic systems. This year's SMTA-CALCE symposium will offer industry professionals access to sessions, lectures, panel discussions, and workshops, all geared toward how to better safeguard the supply chain from counterfeiting.
In a session entitled “Risks to the Supply Chain” Figueroa's and Chesla's presentation, “Proactive Supply Chain Collaboration and Qualification,” will examine vendor qualification from the perspective of both end manufacturers and vendors. On the manufacturing side, Chesla will discuss strategies for managing supply chain risk, especially that posed by counterfeit components, and will detail key selection criteria for qualifying a vendor. Figueroa will present an independent distributor’s view of supply chain risk management, describing the importance of customer/vendor collaboration, certification and accreditation standards, investment in sophisticated laboratory tools and standardized processes and procedures, integrated systems to ensure quality standard adherence, and constant focus on continual improvement and development of a pro-quality culture.
