“Tash and I are completely committed to this project because we believe education is the foundation for economic and social advancement, especially for young girls and women,” said Alexandra Chando. “The statistics on education and its effects on the lives of children across the world are overwhelming. We know that without education, the light of hope for a better life is dim. We are so grateful to our friends, fans and cast mates for their support of this effort.”
Consistently ranked among the world’s 20 least developed countries on the UN’s Human Development Index, Malawi has long been challenged by economic stagnation and a lack of access to education. Since 1993 buildOn has constructed 80 schoolhouses in the Kasungu Region of Malawi. Villages selected have no adequate school structure, and priority is given to villages with no school infrastructure at all. Prior to buildOn, children in these villages have attended classes either in a temporary structure or outside under a tree. Using a participatory methodology, each school structure is constructed in partnership with the communities who will benefit from them.

At home or abroad, buildOn’s goal is to break the cycle of poverty, illiteracy and low expectations through service and education. In the U.S., buildOn empowers urban youth to transform their neighborhoods through intensive community service and to change the world by building schools in some of the economically poorest countries in the world. Internationally, buildOn is constructing schools in Haiti, Nicaragua, Nepal, Senegal, Malawi, and Mali. Our students have contributed over 1 million hours of service in the U.S., and have helped build more than 543 schools around the world. For more information, visit http://www.buildon.org.
