Would you bring a knife to a gunfight? What about a stun gun? A newly released infographic from BrickHouse Security illustrates that in some states, the decision is already made for you.
In “Less Lethal Weapons”, the leading supplier of home and business security tech examines some of the odd legal disparities between the regulation of lethal weapons (handguns and rifles) and non-lethal defensive weapons, like tasers, pepper spray and stun guns. As the infographic reveals, many states impose restrictions on defensive weapons that are almost completely incapable of killing someone, yet virtually no states impose across-the-board restrictions on gun ownership.
"When you do the research, you realize that the double standards in the laws governing stun guns, tasers and pepper spray are not only wrongheaded, they’re dangerous," said Todd Morris, BrickHouse’s founder and CEO.
"If a state guarantees your right to protect yourself with a lethal weapon, why shouldn’t you have the same right to protect yourself with a non-lethal weapon?” Morris continued. “By restricting access to non-lethal defense tools in some states, are we forcing people to purchase handguns or rifles when they would otherwise choose to protect their family with another alternative? We urge the states to re-examine non-lethal weapons legislation.”
Some of the most interesting data included in the infographic from BrickHouse Security includes:
Tasers and stun guns are completely banned in five states and the District of Columbia while no similar state ban exists outlawing guns completely.
There are bans and restrictions on concealed carry of stun guns and tasers, regulations on the locations where they can be possessed, and limits on the legal size and concentration of pepper spray in at least 12 states, while only two states ban concealed carrying of guns.
The infographic makes a strong case for loosening regulations on these “less-lethal” defensive tools. Tasers, stun guns and pepper spray are safer alternatives to guns (in-home accidents are likely to be less harmful when they occur), and the safety they offer is comparable to that of a handgun. The laws governing their ownership and use should be aligned to match the laws on lethal weapons.
Anyone interested in home security and personal safety technology and the laws governing its use will find this infographic fascinating.
