Motif Investing, the company that pioneered low-cost, ideas-based stock investing, has launched an online “community catalog” of new motifs, or theme-based collections of securities, created by its user community. As part of the launch, professional investment advisors and brands can be compensated when customers purchase motifs they have built.

The new user-created catalog—packed with information about specific securities and investment trends—features portfolios of securities built from scratch by individuals, brands and professional investment advisors. Over 7,500 new motifs have been built or customized since this “build your own motif” feature debuted earlier this year, though these motifs have not been featured in a catalog until now. Also, starting today, brands and investment advisors can apply to receive a royalty of at least $1 every time a customer buys one of their motifs. To apply please email advisor(at)motifinvesting(dot)com.

“With our new community catalog, investment advisors and brands can now monetize their ideas and IP through the public markets,” said Hardeep Walia, Motif Investing’s co-founder and chief executive. “No other online-investing site can offer this level of investor empowerment and transparency.”

Elsewhere on its website, Motif still offers an extensive list of ready-made motifs, which are portfolios of stocks, bonds or ETFs linked by common themes such as tablet computing, inflation or home improvement. These motifs also include portfolios built around classic investing strategies such as indexing, high yield dividends, and “Ivy League”, a diversified strategy favored by university endowment managers.

Motif is working with industry regulators on the second phase of its customer-monetization strategy, which will allow individuals to receive a payment when others buy their built motifs.

One of the first partners taking advantage of the new royalty plan is MarketRiders, an online service that helps investors build and manage a globally diversified, low-cost ETF portfolio. MarketRiders clients manage more than $4 billion using the service and will now be able to more easily re-balance their portfolios if they move their accounts to Motif. MarketRiders also will offer Motif customers custom-built ETF portfolios on Motif’s site, lowering transaction costs for its customers and offering them new types of diversified investment vehicles.
