“As both a parent and educator I recommend the Kobo Mini. My daughters Katie 8 & Andie 7 have both enjoyed testing out this Kobo. Katie loves to read so for her this was a natural extension of her reading activities. Andie is a reluctant reader, but using the Kobo these past few weeks has made our mandatory 15 mins of reading each night less of a chore. She likes the empowerment she feels holding the mini on her own and choosing what to read and when. This is the perfect sized ereader for her with controls she is able to easily navigate.” – PTPA parent tester of the Kobo Mini
KIDS ENJOY READING DIGITALLY
A recent report from Kobo, "The Children’s Digital Book Market: The future looks bright," indicates that the availability of children’s titles, the advancement of eBook innovation, and the willingness of parents to provide eReaders to their kids prompted an industry-wide growth in revenue for children’s digital publishing in 2012. In Canada and the U.S., eBook sales for children have increased tenfold since 2010.
In support of this study, Kobo worked with Parent Tested Parent Approved™ (PTPA), North America’s largest volunteer parent testing community with more than 60,000 parents, to survey families about their kids’ digital reading habits. For many parents, the rationale for buying eBooks include the ability to have many books on a single portable device (20%), fostering their children’s love of reading (13%), and enjoying the overall reading experience (13%). PTPA survey respondents listed enjoyment (58%), learning (54%), and comprehension (46%) as the most important aspects of their child’s reading life. The survey also found that children spend a significant amount of time engrossed in books, with 28% reading more than three hours per week, and another 20% reading two to three hours per week.
“As a parent of three, I’m constantly looking for new ways to encourage the love of reading in my kids. At the same time, I am also trying to manage the amount of time that they spend on electronics and in front of screens. eReaders like Touch and Mini let them have instant access to their favourite stories without the distractions that other devices provide,” said Michael Tamblyn, Chief Content Officer, Kobo. “Even with a range of ages, they have all found books they like, so the eReaders in our house are now filled with Percy Jackson, Emily Windsnap, and Geronimo Stilton.”
With an eReader in hand, introducing kids to new places, adventures and literary friends this summer is just a click away. Kobo’s robust library offers great children’s book options. Top choices for kids who like to take magical journeys filled with pirates, vampires, dwarves, detective mice, queens, kings, and a few corrupt wizards include: "Wonder" by R. J. Palacio, "Thea Stilton and the Legend of the Fire Flowers – A Geronimo Stilton Adventure" by Thea Stilton, and "City of Bones" by Cassandra Clare. For teens that love rooting for “Katniss, the girl who was on fire!” or running alongside the wolf pack, top picks this summer include: "Beautiful Creatures" by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl and the second installment of the Hunger Games Trilogy, "Catching Fire" by Suzanne Collins.
