Boston Globe Launches Boston Globe Smartphone App

iPhone App, Built for Mobile Readers, Lets Readers Prioritize the Content That’s Most Relevant to Them

We know that readers want to stay on top of topics they care about, whether that’s the Red Sox, local politics, national news or entertainment. The new Boston Globe app lets the reader decide what news takes priority.

The Boston Globe today launched The Boston Globe iPhone app, designed to appeal to mobile consumers who want an efficient and customized way to read The Globe. The app allows readers to prioritize sections that are most relevant to them and is intended to enable mobile readers to consume Globe content where, when and how they want it. The app is newly available as a free download in the Apple App Store. A subscription is required to access the full content.

“We know that readers want to stay on top of topics they care about, whether that’s the Red Sox, local politics, national news or entertainment,” said Michael Manning, Executive Director for Emerging Products. “The new Boston Globe app lets the reader decide what news takes priority. We already have a responsive design site at BostonGlobe.com, but this app is a real mobile-native experience designed to appeal to people who rely on their phones to stay up to date.”

The new app features a customizable homepage with an “infinite scroll” of articles. Readers choose their favorite sections of the paper, and content from those sections appears first in the main news feed when the app is opened, allowing them to easily swipe between the sections and stories they want to read. The app includes a smart feed “trending” section that keeps track of which stories are read and recommends relevant content from the site and across social media, allowing readers to discover new content.

The app is designed and optimized for smartphones. That means that content, including photos and video, fits within and takes advantage of the entire screen. Navigation is seamless and sharing tools are easy to use.

The Boston Globe app is available through Apple’s Newsstand feature and includes seven days of authoritative Globe content, including photos and video, and will also be updated 24 hours a day, seven days a week with breaking news.

There are three ways readers can use The Boston Globe app, which is available as both a standalone product and as part of the BostonGlobe.com and Globe print subscription package:

  • Free app download in Apple App Store gives users access to four free articles (with advertising) per day
  • Sign up for a 30-day free trial as part of a mobile-only subscription at just $3.99 per month (no advertising). This provides full access to all content and customization options.
  • Available to Globe digital and print subscribers at no extra charge

The new Boston Globe app joins the Globe’s lineup of innovative digital and print products designed to meet the needs of a broad spectrum of readers. For example, The Boston Globe ePaper, launched in 2012, is an interactive digital replica of the print edition of the newspaper, available on the web and as an app; the Globe has a growing library of original e-books, including a recent photo collection of “Boston By Air”; and the print product just launched a new, expanded Sunday Arts section with more color, content and columns.
