56% of Freelancers Dislike Uncertainty of Income, Yet 92% Happy with Their Work Status, Says CreditDonkey.com Survey

Just over half (56%) of freelancers say their biggest complaint is the uncertainty of income that comes with the job. And 18% are tired of their family and friends thinking they don't have a "real job or are not busy," according to a survey by CreditDonkey.com, a small business credit card comparison and personal finance website.

The survey results reflect a realistic take on the financial struggles and realities of freelance professionals, who have grown in number since the most recent recession as companies laid off workers in high numbers and became wary of hiring full-time staff.

While freelancers complain about the uncertainty of income, the constant hustle, and problems getting paid, the vast majority – some 92% – say they are happy with their choice of freelancing.

Highlights:

•     Nearly 1 in 3 became an independent contractor because of a desire to start their own business. 17% did it because they were laid off.
•     When asked what they like the most about freelancing, 34% said the flexible schedule, 22% said the freedom, and 19% said being their own boss.
•     Almost half – some 42% – said they provide some type of creative service. 30% provide operational support, such as administrative assistance. 20% provide marketing and 19% provide IT services.

From November 5 to November 27, 2012, CreditDonkey.com surveyed 424 independent contractors in the U.S., age 18 and over using multiple-choice questions and short-answer questionnaires.
