Military Spouse magazine (http://militaryspouse.com) held its inaugural Military Spouse Summit today in Washington, D.C., the day after its 2013 Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse of the Year® Awards Luncheon. Admiral James Winnefeld, Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, thanked military spouses for the integral role they play and introduced Dr. Jill Biden who addressed the importance of the military family.

"As a military mom, I have seen firsthand that it’s not just our service men and women who sacrifice so much for our country – their spouses and families serve right alongside them,” said Dr. Jill Biden. “I’m always amazed by the strength and resilience of our military spouses – through frequent moves and deployments they are often raising children, running a household, and maintaining their own careers – all without complaint."

The summit addressed a host of topics including employment issues in the military spouse community, working with one’s Congressional members, and advocating for the greater military community. Panelists included: Sheila Casey, Chief Operating Officer at The Hill, Joyce Raezer, Executive Director of the National Military Family Association, Rene Campos, Deputy Director of Government Relations at MOAA, Laura Dempsey, Director of Spouse Employment Programs at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and Meg O’Grady, Director of Spouse Education and Career Opportunities at the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

“We know that when we bring military spouses together, they empower one another, and the day after our annual awards luncheon affords a great opportunity for these men and women to meet in person,” said Kate Meeuf, Brand Director for Military Spouse. “This summit is intended to serve as a forum where military spouses can connect with one another, discuss issues in the military community, and identify ways to have a continuing impact on their military communities.”

Several of the Base and Branch winners from the Military Spouse of the Year Awards Program ® attended or spoke at the Summit. Updates and clips from this foundational event can be found at http://militaryspouse.com/landing/militaryspousesummit.

The Summit was sponsored and supported by Hilton’s Homewood Suites. “Knowing the sacrifices made and strength military spouses demonstrate to rally the ‘troops’ at home, Homewood Suites simply wants to say thank you,” said Bill Duncan global head of brand management for Homewood Suites by Hilton. “Our goal is to support our military, starting with the benefits of family travel by offering affordable vacations that strengthen bonds and reconnect families.”

Military Spouse plans to hold and grow subsequent summits that will explore and address the issues that face military families after more than a decade of war. Stay up to date with military spouse news and events at http://www.militaryspouse.com.
