While doctors and researchers still don't know much about how or why children get autism, more research studies are being conducted than ever before. Doctors do know that autism is a brain development disorder characterized by impaired social interaction and communication and by restricted and repetitive behavior.

There is an enormous amount of information on autism and it is difficult to process the varied medical opinions on this disorder. Internet retailer Magazines.com is highlighting its most popular parenting magazine subscriptions for Autism Awareness Month to encourage parents and soon-to-be parents to find a consistent reliable source of information. Magazines.com is offering magazines Parents, American Baby, Parenting Early Years and Pediatrics for Parents at significant discounts off cover prices.

According to the Mayo Clinic, approximately three to six out of 1,000 children in the United States have autism. It's not clear if the increase in number of cases is because more children are developing the disorder or because there is better detection and more reporting of autism. What is clear is there is no cure for autism.

Intensive, early treatment can make an enormous difference in the lives of many children with the disorder.
