Small business owner launches web site to assist with communication during natural disasters

Small businesses in America provide half of the nation's GDP according to the US Small Business Administration. And entrepreneurs all over the country are realizing how they can position that economic influence behind causes that they believe in.

For example, small business owner Alvin Brown started a web site, http://www.WeAreSafeandSound.com, for that very reason.

We Are Safe and Sound is a free emergency and disaster communications service. Users can register ahead of time and in the event of a natural disaster and they can post a message on the site via the internet or voice mail for their friends and family ensuring that people can find each other when they need to.

"I personally live in the Gulf Coast area and saw first-hand the worry that a breakdown in communication can create during a natural disaster," said Brown. "We started the site to make sure that families can stay connected when it matters most."

Hurricane season runs from June 1 to the end of November and Brown has been working with shelters and churches specifically in the Gulf Coast region to help spread the word about the site.

"As a business owner, it's not very often that I get to use my natural giftedness in business to make the world around me a better place," said Brown. "I want to do everything I can to encourage other entrepreneurs to do the same thing."
