Wright Line Proves Collaboration is Key in Solving Air-Flow-Management Problems in the Data Center

Manufacturer Teams with Advanced Data Centers to Develop Scalable, Green "Independent Containment System"

Worcester, MA (PRWEB) September 16, 2009 -- Wright Line, the leading manufacturer of tech-driven environments, today detailed its successful collaboration with Advanced Data Centers (ADC) and Rumsey Engineers, Inc. to create a scalable, sustainable, vendor-neutral, free-standing, heat containment solution for high density computing in the data center.

The level of information density is continually increasing within data centers. As data center servers work harder to process information, larger amounts of heat are created, greatly impeding data center efficiency, optimization and energy management.

ADC, a leading owner and operator of wholesale data centers, required a containment system that would capture server exhaust heat for its 90MW pre-certified LEED Platinum facility. The system needed to be freestanding, scalable, sustainable and vendor-neutral. ADC partnered with Wright Line because of its green manufacturing capabilities and its 75 years of collaborative customer experience.

Through an expedited and collaborative process, a prototype of the Independent Containment System (ICS) was designed and developed. The ICS Alpha version was then delivered to ADC's data center.

Wright Line, a member of the US Green Building Council, also addressed ADC's sustainable green requirements with several green manufacturing processes. Many of Wright Line's products are GREENGUARD Certified and compliant with the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) standards for products from the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute. This certification means that Wright Line products have gone through rigorous testing to prove that individual components contain low-emitting materials.

Details of the Design

Designed to provide maximum flexibility in all environments, the ICS, assembled within the footprint of a standard aisle, is constructed with a tubular steel frame. The frame's structure is designed to be freestanding and meets seismic Zone 4 standards. The design included a peak cabinet load capability of 30kW.

In addition, the prototype was designed to accept a variety of Wright Line's "End of Row" door products, including "Café Style" doors selected by ADC. These doors swing in both directions ensuring ease of personnel access, airflow management support, and visual indications of over/under pressurization.

The ceiling of the ICS unit, a lightweight steel frame, as well as the exhaust chimneys, accepts clear Lexan panels. These clear panels allow ambient room light to illuminate the hot aisle, eliminating the need for energy-consuming supplemental lighting.

The 2'X2' chimneys can reside anywhere on the roof structure. Additionally the chimneys, designed to be adjustable for retrofitting into existing ceiling grids, can be added as the IT load increases. The ICS wall construction includes vertical blanking panels to maintain containment when racks are partially deployed. In addition, they can be easily removed in sections to allow the deployment of new IT cabinets.
