The Philanthropic Initiative, Inc. (TPI), a nonprofit advisory firm dedicated to maximizing the social impact of charitable giving, has named Cynthia Gibson, Ph.D., as senior vice president. Gibson joins TPI after a twenty-six year career in the nonprofit sector where she held leadership roles for several national foundations and nonprofits and has become a highly regarded strategist, thought leader, writer, and practitioner on issues ranging from civic engagement and nonprofit management to health care and education.
As senior vice president, Gibson will play an integral role in expanding TPI’s networks and client base that includes individuals, families, foundations, and corporations around the globe who are committed to achieving deep social impact with their philanthropy. TPI’s President and CEO, Ellen Remmer views Gibson’s hire as continuing on TPI’s long-standing commitment to being at the forefront of philanthropy. “In addition to bringing the deep practical experience that ambitious donors crave, Cynthia Gibson is a leading thinker and innovator in the thick of exciting ideas reshaping philanthropy today. She sees effective philanthropy to be both an art and a science, and as a master connector, she is able to bring people together to collaborate and get results—an approach that reflects the networked culture in which we now live and work.”
“As pioneers of strategic philanthropy advising, The Philanthropic Initiative has always stood as an inspiration for me and much of the field,” said Gibson. “They’re a deeply respected team that brings a comprehensive approach to helping donors transform their visions into reality—from clarifying values to developing strategic and thoughtful initiatives to carefully evaluating progress, outcomes, and impact. That approach is one that works, as evidenced by TPI’s long and impressive track record of success.”
Gibson comes to TPI from a New York City-based consulting practice where she has provided strategic planning, program evaluation and design, communications/marketing, policy analysis and research, fundraising, and positioning services for foundations such as Case, Goldman Sachs, Ford, Christopher and Dana Reeve, Einhorn, Nathan Cummings, and Kettering. Nonprofit organizations that have retained her services include the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, Campus Compact, Academy for Educational Development, and New York Cares. Prior to forming Cynthesis Consulting, Gibson served for five years as a program officer at Carnegie Corporation of New York where she was named a “Power and Influence Top 50 Leader” by the Nonprofit Times.
Cynthia Gibson serves on the boards of Nonprofit Quarterly, Public Conversations Project, Mobilize.org and Idealist.org and serves on the advisory board of VolunteerMatch.org and the Mayor’s Nonprofit Leadership Commission (NYC).
