The American Pet Products Association (APPA) and Pet Industry Distributors Association (PIDA) are pleased to announce famed dog trainer, best selling author and TV personality, Victoria Stilwell as the 2011 recipient of Global Pet Expo’s annual “Excellence in Journalism and Outstanding Contributions to the Pet Industry Award”.
Stilwell will personally accept the award Thursday, March 17, 2011 in Orlando, Florida at The Purina® Media Reception at Global Pet Expo. This media-exclusive event is held in conjunction with Global Pet Expo, the pet industry’s largest annual tradeshow, taking place March 16-18, 2011 at the Orange County Convention Center. Global Pet Expo attendees include independent pet product retailers, distributors and mass market buyers, media and other qualified individuals from the pet industry.
Stilwell is best known for her role as the star of Animal Planet’s hit TV series “It’s Me or the Dog,” through which she shares her insight and passion for positive, reward-based training. In the show, which airs in more than 40 countries, Stilwell teaches both owners and dogs through positive associations and confidence building techniques. She is a passionate advocate for positive reinforcement training methods and vocally opposes the use of punitive, dominance-based training. Since its premier in 2005, Stilwell’s show has been the recipient of multiple honors including a 2009 People’s Choice Award nomination. In 2010, she launched Victoria Stilwell Positively Dog Training, the world’s first global network of hand-picked, world class positive reinforcement dog trainers dedicated to providing the public a brand name they can trust in humane, force-free training.
In addition to her work on “It’s Me or the Dog,” Stilwell has written two best-selling books, It’s Me or the Dog: How to Have the Perfect Pet and Fat Dog Slim: How to Have a Healthy, Happy Pet. Stilwell has appeared on countless talk shows, news broadcasts and radio shows all over the world and is a regular columnist for The Bark, Dog World, American Dog and Dogs Today magazines where she further promotes her ideals. She also served as a judge on CBS’s “Greatest American Dog”.
Her fondness for rescue animals in need of rehabilitation is evident in her efforts with various animal rescue organizations. Stilwell’s work with the Wisconsin Puppy Mill Project, the Humane Society of the United States, Puppy Mill Awareness Day and the Waterside Action Group have increased awareness of the practice of puppy mills globally and shown her unwavering commitment to the well-being of pets. She is also the proud owner of a Chocolate Lab, Sadie.
“Victoria is known around the world as an advocate for dogs and positive reinforcement,” said Bob Vetere, president of APPA. “Her dedication to improving the lives of man’s best friend through training, education and rescue work have helped to promote the joys of responsible pet ownership. We are fortunate to have such a committed and passionate individual working within the pet industry.”
In honor of Stilwell’s award, Purina®, the sponsor of the media-exclusive event, is making a donation to the Victoria Stilwell Foundation. This organization provides financial support and canine behavior expertise to assistance dog organizations and small animal rescue shelters while promoting the concept of reward-based, positive reinforcement dog training philosophies in organizations and households throughout the United States.
