In her new book “On Being Born Again and Again: How Grief, Gratitude and Faith Led to New Life” (published by Trafford Publishing) author Margery McManus Leach details her life’s stories after the death of her second husband.
Leach’s early retirement from library career led to a series of overseas seminars that opened her eyes to horrors and injustices beginning with testimonies heard at a church sponsored event in 1982. Leach knew she had to become an advocate of peace for oppressed peoples.
After several years of speaking to groups across the United States about her encounters in Korea, China, Japan, Nepal, the Pacific Islands and the Philippines, a back injury while traveling opened a new calling with the Valley Religious Task Force on Central America based in Phoenix, Arizona. Expanded peace efforts included Cuba, Guatemala and particularly Chiapas, Mexico. Leach chronicled travels with additional peace organizations through journal reports, newspaper articles and newsletters. During this time, she also aided humanitarian delegations to Cuba.
An excerpt from “On Being Born Again and Again”:
“The envelopes contained newsletters about the abuses of power. We were each given our own copies of the newsletters. Articles included accounts about such things as a pastor whose church was infiltrated by a KCIA agent. The official then took over the financial operations and refused to pay the pastor’s salary. On the Rev. Park’s sixtieth birthday, he was beaten by a gang as he tried to enter his church and later was arrested. The church offices were vandalized and torched. We were told to put this explosive material in the safest place we could think of and mail the envelopes after arrival back in the United States.”
Leach hopes that her experiences will open other's eyes to the injustices exposed as well as possibilities of change in their own lives. “I want them to welcome and begin to see the stranger as part of our total human family,” she says.
