We will visit several remote areas near Cartago, Costa Rica throughout the duration of our trip, and will leave behind community members now trained in life saving skills and educational materials to be shared with others. Dr. Karl Disque

Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer of National Health Care Provider Solutions, Dr. Karl "Fritz" Disque, and several trustees of the Disque Foundation will travel to Costa Rica the first week of December. Partnered with Cross-Cultural Solutions (CCS), the team will train medical personnel and other local citizens on Basic Life Support skills.
The Disque Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a mission to further advance the quality of education and health care to the underserved, both domestic and abroad, through the use of technology. Some of the foundation’s notable work has included trips to Ethiopia and Haiti.
According to the American Heart Association, coronary heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States. Globally, it is a bigger issue. Research shows cardiovascular diseases account for nearly 30% of all deaths worldwide. Furthermore, most heart attack victims live in third world countries. CPR saves precious time for victims while awaiting the arrival trained emergency personnel. In the US, less than one in three victims will receive BLS from a bystander; this statistic is drastically reduced in underdeveloped countries.
“Through our work at National Health Care Provider Solutions, I have found that Basic Life Support skills are not challenging to teach. However, in countries like Costa Rica, people do not have access to educational materials or instructors,” Dr. Disque said. “We will visit several remote areas near Cartago, Costa Rica throughout the duration of our trip, and will leave behind community members now trained in life saving skills and educational materials to be shared with others.”
