In her new historical romance novel “Heart & Soul” (published by Trafford Publishing), author Brenda Meister has crafted the compelling story of a couple who loses to, and then overcomes, the pressures and prejudices of society to be together.
The year is 1841. Lara MacKenzie Kendrick, the niece of a whorehouse madam, returns to Charleston to claim her inheritance. Before she can do that, though, she has to deal with the executor of her aunt’s estate—Kyle Garrett Harrison, her ex-fiancé who, years earlier, issued the ultimatum that forced her to choose her family over his love.
Both characters are strong-willed and sharp-tongued, and the intense action and conflict between the two provide the clear draw to the novel. “Although they each have their faults,” Meister says, “these are characters the reader will be able to relate to and will cheer on.”
“Heart & Soul” highlights social prejudices and the way perceptions and beliefs can better or damage lives. “Although society’s values have changed,” the author notes, “class values are still prevalent today and still pose similar challenges.”
