The start and use of punctuation occurred around 1500 AD. Prior to this, no commas, periods, quotation marks, etc., were used in writing. What one doesn’t have, one learns to do without. Books then were rare and there were no printing presses. Somewhere in those early years, someone decided that interpretative marks were needed to enhance writing. Yet, puns were employed much earlier. They are inferential; they twist together meanings and entwine connections to enhance incongruity. No ifs, ands, or butts.
Double Dealing III: The Pun written by author Chuck Closson is a humor book that shares to readers everything about pun, a form of word play which suggests two or more meanings in the same sentence. And when these two unsuitable, completely inconsistent and incompatible things are joined together, its effect can be very humorous.
Within the chapters of this book, readers will find examples of some punned American idioms and their corresponding answers, punned literary works, puns used by playing with parts of a word, the spoonerisms and Norm Crosby routine, punned names, pun intended consequences, and so much more. It also includes some practice exercises to make it more amusing.
Double Dealing III: The Pun is a humorous and entertaining read suitable for all ages. They are here to stay and in fact, have been around since ancient times. More than a clever play of words or whether it is intentional or accidental, the use of pun in this book is intended to illicit fun for the readers. While some may consider them to be just a form of humor, others applaud the ingenuity and command of the language that they display.
