Tim Loughnane wanted to see the world. He had dreams of watching lions roam the African savannah, exploring the inner cities and countryside of a foreign land, and living amongst its people. From his comfortable life in New Zealand, he fantasized about experiencing life somewhere else; and earlier this month thanks to the help of a low cost organization, he turned that fantasy into reality.
Loughnane was able to live out his dream of traveling to Africa with the help of the international volunteer and internship organization Cross-Continental Solutions based in Vancouver, Canada. Cross-Continental orchestrated his dream trip, which included a two day wildlife safari, and fulfilled all the requirements for an unforgettable excursion.
“I went for an overnight safari to Masai Mara which was really cool. Saw some brilliant game and took lots of great photos. Up close with lions and elephants! It was a truly rewarding, once in a lifetime, experience.”
The community enrichment portion of Loughnane's volunteer vacation was spent on a painting project at a local school, which is part of a children's center in Mombasa. His work at the school allowed local children to complete their exams close to home, saving them from traveling 5 kilometers away, and paying 3500 shillings (around $40 USD) in fees. The work completed was a relatively small job by first world standards, but it made a huge difference in the lives of families in the area, as well as the orphaned children who live at the center. The headmaster of the children’s center shared his gratitude to Loughnane, in a message sent after he returned home.
“On your short stay here in Mombasa, Kenya, we saw a loving and committed brother lift what we were unable to lift ourselves. Thank you.”
Most international volunteers wish to experience the local way of life, and this dream was no different for Loughnane. This aspect of his experience definitely touched him deeply, and left him with some newly gained perspective.
“Though we probably all struggle to get by money-wise from time to time, this trip showed pretty clearly that if you can turn on a tap and water comes out, and you are lucky enough to be able to drink it, then you’re doing pretty well for yourself. Hot water is just showing off.”
Loughnane recalls a particularly touching moment when he finished his painting project. “Probably the coolest part of my whole trip was hearing some street kids, who sleep wherever, and scavenge garbage to live, say that they were definitely going to go to school more often now that the school looks so flash.” At that moment, Loughnane could clearly see that his work had truly made a positive impact in the community.
Organizing an African safari can be difficult even at the best of times, and doing so on a budget can be a truly daunting task. Combining personalized volunteer abroad experiences with unique vacation opportunities is just one of the valuable services Cross-Continental offers. Upon request, they can help with trip planning and sightseeing opportunities, all while keeping costs as low as possible. Such details make for a successful trip on every level. For Loughnane, it made all the difference.
“The team at Cross-Continental were absolutely brilliant with helping to organize my trip to Kenya. This not only included coordinating the volunteer placement with the orphanage, but even helping with sightseeing and transportation requirements, and making sure costs were kept as low as possible." Tim continued, "The international volunteer coordinator Jenn worked tirelessly to make sure the trip was a success in every fashion and followed up during and after the trip to make sure everything went well. I thoroughly recommend using them to everyone."
