This car blends the positive attributes we expect from a Honda – safety, reliability, and comfort – with an environmentally sound fuel alternative. I’m really proud that we are able to provide that win-win combination to this community.”

A dealership in West Mifflin, PA (DEAN Honda)has been chosen from more than 1,000 Honda retail locations to offer the 2013 Civic, powered by clean burning, compressed natural gas (CNG).
CNG, as an alternative to conventional fuels, has had limited availability for smaller industrial (lawn care and forklift) equipment and fleet vehicles for several years. However, the very popular Honda Civic model is now available to general consumers in 36 states, with a natural gas option. This vehicle has been completely retooled to stringent safety standards to accommodate CNG. The adaptation included modifications to the engine like stronger connecting rods, re-designed valves and valve seats, modified fuel injectors, and a pressure regulator.
Lighter than a hybrid, the new Civic delivers a 110 horsepower rating in an earth-friendly, stylish design that reaches 60 mph in 10.7 seconds. It is easily fueled at an increasing number of CNG stations throughout metro areas. Average fuel cost, based on January 2012 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports, is the equivalent of $2.13 per gasoline gallon – about 5.6 cents per mile.
The EPA indicates that domestic production supplies 87 percent of the natural gas used in the United States. Because of its lower carbon content, natural gas burns cleaner than diesel fuel or gasoline, resulting in lower (by six to 11 percent) tailpipe emissions of greenhouse gases.
Owner, Steve Sherman, is pleased that Dean Honda has been selected by the American Honda Motor Company as one of a limited number of dealerships to pilot sales of the Honda Civic CNG. “Just like many of our customers, I’ve lived in this area a long time, I care about the environment, and I believe in Honda quality. This car blends the positive attributes we expect from a Honda – safety, reliability, and comfort – with an environmentally sound fuel alternative. I’m really proud that we are able to provide that win-win combination to this community.”
Honda is the largest manufacturer of internal combustion engines in the world, producing more than 14 million each year. The brand is well-known for customer loyalty and satisfaction. Dean Honda has served the Pittsburgh area for over four decades. The introduction of the Civic CNG is a natural step in their partnership.
