Many people experience depression throughout the year. The cold winter months cater to bad moods, negativity, and bad feelings, sometimes called the winter blues. Between the stresses of the holidays, the lack of outdoor activities and sunlight, and the overall seclusion, depression can run rampant. By the end of the season, many people feel down, helpless, hopeless, and unmotivated. Texas Counseling offers remedies to push through the last couple of weeks of winter and take full advantage of the changes that come with spring.

There are signs for the onset of depression. It is important to identify them in ourselves or others in order to take control of those feelings. Symptoms of depression include feeling sad for a period of time, having a loss of interest in activities typically enjoyed, experiencing loss of energy, sleeping too much or too little, and being withdrawn from social interaction.

Fortunately, there are many ways to help ward off the onset of depression. Developing a routine is a sure way to taking control of the winter blues. Individuals who have a reason to get up in the morning are more driven, and are generally happier. Agendas and to-do lists are tangible ways to start implementing a healthy routine to help us look forward to a new day. Spending time outside can drastically boost our mood. Incorporating a few spurts of 10 minutes a day in the sun will increase vitamin D levels and optimism. On rainy days, well-lit areas can help as well. Looking for fun outdoor activities, such as meeting up with friends or going out for a short walk, will help in staying positive through the last weeks of winter.

If you feel that you are unable to control your depression, Texas Counseling offers individual therapy sessions to help with issues of depression and anxiety.
