Since 1970, Americans have celebrated Earth Day with eco-friendly activities and environmentally enriching events. Earth Day this year has special significance for Madison, VA-based Plow & Hearth with the welcoming of sustainable business into their family of brands. was started by Vincent Cobb in Chicago 2003 as The idea spawned from the reusable shopping bag movement, which spurred the company to instate a powerful mission to increase awareness of the plastic bag problem and educate others on the growing environmental impact.

From their inception, has broadened their product focus to provide consumers with reusable options for all types of use-and-toss items—from reusable grocery bags to reusable bento boxes, water bottles, snack sacks, paper towels, utensils, cleaning products and a host of other disposable alternatives.

To welcome and to continue with their mission to increasing awareness of the environmental impacts consumer waste, Plow & Hearth promoted a waste free lunch day, encouraging over 350 employees in Madison and Vandalia, Ohio locations to bring zero-waste lunches with the goal to create as little waste as possible.

“By educating our associates about ways to reduce their waste through the use of reusable containers, we hope to create a ripple that will produce a long-lasting effect," said Frank Wood, VP of Operations and Facilities, who is also Plow & Hearth’s Sustainability Committee Chair.

As part of the Earth Day festivities, two of Plow & Hearth’s current partners American Rivers and the National Forest Foundation sent representatives to discuss their eco-initiatives. Employees were also given the opportunity to take part in a composting demo and participate in the planting potatoes in the Plow & Hearth Employee Garden.

The acquisition marks the fifth in less than a decade for the growing Plow & Hearth portfolio, whose focus on digital enhancement, retail expansion and brand building has positioned them as business leaders in the mid-Atlantic.
