When Google first announced the launch of its own social media client, Google+, many industry experts foresaw a sea change; any platform that harnessed the networking capabilities of Facebook and united them to the potent Google brand name was sure to be a hit, or so many social marketers believed. A year into its existence, however, Google+ is seen by many industry insiders as a failure—and a new set of statistics does little to disprove this conventional wisdom. According to the social marketing gurus at Endless Leadz, though, there is much more to Google+ than first meets the eye, and simply focusing on its usage stats betrays a fundamental misunderstanding of what Google+ is all about.
To be sure, the most recent set of Google+ numbers can be seen as disappointing. The network has a total membership of about 500 million users, well short of the 1.01 billion members currently on Facebook. Moreover, only 135 million Google+ users energetically peruse the social platform’s stream, and only 235 million are even active users.
Zsolt Bicskey, the founder of Baltimore-based marketing firm Endless Leadz, has weighed in on these new numbers with a statement to the press—and according to Bicskey, these seemingly disappointing numbers only tell part of the story. “The trendy thing to say is that Google+ is a failure, and that its usefulness as a marketing platform is limited, at best,” says Bicskey. “The thing to remember, though, is that Google+ is not just a social network. It is interwoven into the very fiber of Google, and it has radically transformed the entire company—which makes it a radically different animal than Facebook, Twitter, or Pinterest. It is imprudent to hold Google+ to the very same standards, because what it is so much more than just another social network.”
Bicskey points to the tremendous import that Google+ has for local search results as just one example of the platform’s importance to businesses and to marketing professionals. “Google+ Local alone justifies the place of Google+ in any small business’ marketing budget,” he says. “Google+ Local is an invaluable and widely influential local business directory, perhaps second only to Yelp in terms of its import for local search.” Bicskey and his EndlessLeadz.com team make local search a major priority for their business clients, in Baltimore and beyond.
The Endless Leadz founder goes on to note some of the other important innovations that come with the Google+ brand name. “Just recently, Google has announced the debut of its Google+ Communities, which could potentially become crucial marketing hubs for businesses and brands,” remarks Bicskey. “The bottom line is that Google+ may not have the same numbers that Facebook has, and you do not hear about its growth like you do Pinterest’s, yet it remains a pivotal consideration for anyone and everyone who is serious about social marketing.”
