Imported food may only represent 15 per cent of food consumed in the U.S., but it is also responsible for half of food-borne illness outbreaks, according to a newly released infographic by Intelex. The document outlines statistics related to the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), a sweeping overhaul of American food safety laws that has been gradually rolled out over the last two years.
Additionally, food-borne illness across the nation is on the rise according to the report. Of the nearly 40 outbreaks and 2,348 illnesses between 2005 and 2010, nearly half occurred in 2009 and 2010.
“With the implementation of FSMA, the landscape of food safety across the U.S. is dramatically changing,” explains Intelex President and CEO Mark Jaine. “We’ve released this infographic and accompanying eBook to educate American businesses and consumers on the staggering statistics associated with food safety in the U.S., and to guide them on how to best prepare for FSMA’s stringent requirements.”
To comply with FSMA’s wide-ranging requirements, almost all food and beverage companies in the U.S. will be required to implement preventive controls, monitor foreign suppliers, and face increased, risk-based inspections, among other things.
“While it can always be challenging to comply with new regulations, it is our hope that FSMA is successful at improving the state of food safety across the nation,” adds Jaine. “Fewer food-related illnesses, outbreaks and recalls mean improved public health, lower health care costs, and a reduced financial impact to business.”
