“By eliminating deficiencies in critical hair color enzymes and antioxidants, gray hair and hair dyes will soon be in the past.” Mark Rosenberg, M. D.

HealthyAnswers.com says that gray hair is a sign of nutritional deficiencies, not old age. They recently reported that gray hair starts with nutritional deficiencies in antioxidants and magnesium that set off a domino effect of critical nutrients that preserve hair color. They report that about 75% of Americans are deficient in magnesium. As a result, there is a reduction in the production of the enzymes catalase and methionine sulfoxide reductase (MSR) which fight hydroxyl and peroxyl free radicals (literally hydrogen peroxide) that bleaches hair follicles.
HealthyAnswers.com further relates that this hydrogen peroxide substance fills up in the hair follicles and damages melanocytes – the cells responsible for hair color. There is also a reduction of tyrosine – a protein responsible for the health of melanocytes. As a result, hairs produced in these damaged and bleach-filled hair follicles grow out in differing shades of gray-white. However, as HealthyAnswers.com reports, new research has found that L-methionine, an amino acid, helps block this free radical bleach damage to hair follicles. In addition, magnesium stimulates more production of the catalase and MSR enzymes that protect hair color.
HealthyAnswers.com medical expert Mark Rosenberg, M.D. explains the significance of these findings: “Gray hair often makes people feel old and deflates their spirit every time they look in the mirror. Many of them color their hair with hair dyes to maintain a youthful appearance. With this new research though, simple nutritional deficiencies have been found to be the cause of what makes hair go gray. I’ve always felt that most diseases of aging are caused by nutritional deficiencies and that supplementation of key antioxidants and minerals can ward off many of these conditions.”
