Houston, TX (PRWEB) June 21, 2013
Houston car accident attorney Kevin Krist of the Law Offices of Kevin Krist today announced his support for an effort to raise awareness of how often distracted driving leads to running red lights and car accidents.
The National Coalition for Safer Roads (NCSR) and FocusDriven have launched a new joint campaign called “Stop Distraction On Red” to highlight the dangers of distracted driving and red-light running, which the groups say are “two serious driving epidemics that significantly and negatively affect the safety of our roads and highways.”
The groups say in a new report released on June 6 that 12 percent of red-light violations recorded in 19 communities over a three-month period were caused by distracted driving. A news release issued by the groups quotes the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), which says that red-light running is the leading cause of urban car accidents in the U.S., and the National Safety Council, which says cell phone use is a factor in 25 percent of car crashes.
“This should hit home with anyone who drives in the Houston area, where there are thousands of intersections with stoplights and distracted driving has become a significant cause of car accidents,” Krist said.
“Hundreds of drivers in Southeast Texas die every year in car accidents that involve distracted drivers, and thousands more are injured,” Krist said. “In many of these accidents, a cell phone was the source of distraction for the at-fault driver.”
Krist’s law firm investigates car accidents in Southeast Texas in the preparation of personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits on behalf of people hurt by careless and reckless drivers. He said distracted driving is a factor in many of the car crash cases the firm handles.
The NCSR and FocusDriven also say that their study’s findings suggest that strict cell phone bans reduce the risks associated with distracted driving by nearly 7 percent. Less than 10 percent of red-light violations in the groups’ study involved distracted driving in communities that have strict laws against cell phone use – compared to more than 16 percent in communities that do not.
Texas bans the use of wireless devices by drivers under age 18, all drivers in school zones and school bus drivers who have children on their bus, Krist said.
“If you look closer at the NSC’s data, you’ll find that drivers talking on handheld or hands-free cell phones are four times more likely to be involved in a car accident,” Krist said. “Meanwhile, the IIHS says injuries occur in 39 percent of car crashes in which motorists disobey traffic controls, which points out the importance of the new campaign.”
A joint multimedia campaign mounted by the NCSR and FocusDriven includes an infographic, video elements and an opportunity for partner collaborations, the news release says.
Krist said in addition to supporting Stop Distraction On Red, his firm will continue to fight for the rights of Southeast Texas drivers, pedestrians and others who are hurt in car accidents caused by distracted driving and red-light violations.
“If you've been injured in a crash that was caused by someone else's negligence or recklessness, you have rights that you should discuss with an experienced Texas car accident attorney,” Krist said. “You deserve to be made financially whole for your losses.”
