If you thought Leicester Square is just for tourists, students and ‘out of towners’ it’s time to think again. London’s West End has transformed over the past decade and is now one of the capital’s coolest areas and a hub for fashionable drinking and dining. There are numerous first class restaurants in the area, and tucked away behind a hidden doorway off the eternally frenetic Leicester Square is one of London’s hippest, most intimate and little known cocktail bars - The Icon Balcony Bar.
Situated directly above the legendary Empire Cinema, which has hosted numerous screen legends from Charlie Chaplin to Daniel Craig, the Icon Balcony Bar is one of London’s true hidden gems - an elegant and intimate candlelit space serving innovative and superbly mixed cocktails in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. The plush interior of sparkling chandeliers, antique wallpaper and exposed brickwork is reminiscent of a French boudoir. Cosy red velvet seating comfortably holds 80, whilst a central doorway opens out onto the Icon’s most celebrated feature – a huge terrace area perfect for enjoying an alfresco drink with friends whilst watching the frenetic buzz of the West End below. Balmy summer nights are a treat on the Icon’s balcony, drawing an elegant crowd of savvy drinkers who appreciate a well mixed cocktail served with a fun, relaxed vibe.
Better still, you don’t need to be a member to enjoy all the Icon has to offer. The bar’s signature is its friendly welcome and relaxed atmosphere. Those in the know can get a birds eye view of guests arriving at The Empire Cinema’s premieres including Tom Cruise, Bruce Willis and Madonna, whilst sampling drinks lovingly prepared by renowned mixologist Kai Weller.
Kai started his mixology career at the award winning Lonsdale in Notting Hill, where he was trained by legendary bartender Dick Bradsell. Kai has also set up numerous iconic London venues including Green & Red, Bungalow 8 and All Star Lanes. He has won numerous cocktail competitions including 1st Place in the national Havana Club competition. Most recently Kai opened the Booking Office Bar in the newly refurbished St Pancras Renaissance Hotel.
To celebrate the Icon Bar’s 6th birthday, Kai has created a new range of 6 dessert themed cocktails, the perfect end to a meal or for a sweet treat, putting together liquor and pudding to create the ultimate indulgence. New York Blueberry Cheesecake features vanilla vodka and liqueur, sugar, cream cheese and double cream with a crumble rim. Fresh apples shaken with vodka and pomme verte mix with vanilla infused cream to create the Apple Pie and Custard Cocktail, whilst the classic Tiramisu Cocktail recreates Italian glamour with vodka and Crème de Cacao with coffee, double cream and marscapone.
The Icon Bar is open daily from 6pm until 2am and is also the perfect party venue for intimate and sophisticated private events for up to 80 people.
