If a business owner had, for example, only 10 links to his website and all of them pointed to the same thing — say, a single favored key phrase such as "hair salon Sydney" — then the leading search engine may interpret this as a manipulative practice. A better move, Schramko says, is to make only about 10% of the links point to that phrase and direct the rest to other similar phrases.

The same thing would apply to another website owner who might have 100 anchor text links; using 50 of those links for one key phrase would definitely be considered manipulative, so the aim would be to use just 10 — or maybe even less — on the phrase and distribute the others to various words.

"You need to come up with phrases that do not have the two phrases that you really want to rank for," the seasoned entrepreneur elaborates. "I know it’s counter-intuitive, but if you keep pushing it on the phrase you want to rank for, you will actually drop for that result.

"Because we think that, with the (algorithm) updates, they take a percentage of anchor text links. If it's too much, it will discount your website from getting ranked, and if it’s a little bit less, then you’re probably safer."
