Sustainability and green initiatives are all the rage, but are they profitable? And, furthermore, is there any way to leverage those projects for business development purposes?

It’s no secret that energy-efficiency initiatives can help a public refrigerated warehouse (PRW) save energy, while reducing maintenance and energy costs. It’s also no secret that PRW customers are developing their own sustainability programs and establishing sustainability benchmarks they expect suppliers and partners to contribute towards. Some PRWs are beginning to see the benefit in leveraging their energy-efficiency initiatives for brand-building purposes in an effort to attract or retain customers. By completing energy-efficiency projects and branding themselves as a sustainable PRW, International Association of Refrigerated Warehouse (IARW) and World Food Logistics Organization (WFLO) members can derive a business development benefit in addition to their reduced maintenance and energy costs. The end result is “profitable sustainability,” the theme of the 122nd IARW-WFLO Convention and Expo, which will be held at the Westin Diplomat in Hollywood, FL on May 4-8, 2013.

On Monday, May 6th at 11:15am, SmartWatt Energy’s President and Marketing Director, Chris Covell and Danielle Marquis, will be hosting a focus session at the Convention with Nor-Am Cold Storage’s Lead Engineer, Bernie Thomas, titled “Leveraging Energy-Efficiency to Build a Sustainable Brand.” The focus session will explore energy-efficiency initiatives for cold storage warehouses with the highest return on investment, including a case study of IARW PRW member Nor-Am Cold Storage’s recent LED lighting project with SmartWatt Energy at their Schuyler, NE facility. This session will also explore the marketing and public relations efforts Nor-Am and SmartWatt Energy completed in an effort to derive additional business development benefits.

SmartWatt Energy will also be exhibiting during the conference. Attendees are encouraged to visit the company at booth 221 to qualify for a free energy analysis and discuss sustainability and brand-building goals with staff. The IARW-WFLO Convention & Expo is held annually for members of the refrigerated and frozen warehousing and food logistics industries.
