Obesity can have consequences other than just a person's health. As pointed out in a January 26, 2013 article by USA Today, “Do Penalties for Smokers and the Obese Make Sense?” (usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/01/26/do-penalties-for-smokers-and-the-obese-make-sense/1867201/), obesity and smoking seem to be united in the public mind as costly activity requiring consequences: “why not just let these health sinners die prematurely from their unhealthy habits?” Many of those in employment settings, says Dr. Joseph Naim of the Lap Band Surgery Center, can share this unfortunate opinion, which can make it hard for those with extra weight to find work in a difficult economy. Further on in the USA Today article, it mentioned the general financial costs to the country: “Annual health care costs are roughly $96 billion for smokers and $147 billion for the obese, the government says.” Statistics such as these may be used by employers to justify to themselves the real reason why they won't hire people carrying extra weight, such as health care costs and missed work days due to poor health. Currently, companies are examining their financial condition very soberly, and especially health care costs, in light of the Affordable Care Act requirements for hiring new workers.
While the USA Today article mentioned smoking in a worse light, saying that research suggests that smoking reduces a person's lifespan by 10 years or more, the picture given for obesity is hardly better: “the obese die five to 12 years prematurely”. This picture may give those considering lap band a double reason for installation. One, so that they can live longer. Two, so that employers don't worry about whether or not they will be a good long-term prospect for work.
It may be true, as mentioned by a Queens college student in USA Today, that “I should be able to do what I want”. Sadly, the advantages or disadvantages to the group as a whole (and the shareholders in particular) will almost always trump the rights of the individual in a business setting. Although CVS Pharmacy claimed in a March 20, 2013 ABC News article (“CVS Pharmacy Wants Workers Health Information or They'll Pay a Fine”) that filling out a health questionnaire was “voluntary” for employees, there was also a $50 per month fine attached to those who refused to do so. CVS said that the goal was to help employees take responsibility for their health, but ABC News' medical editor, Dr. Besser, said that the real goal was for healthier employees to help the company improve end-of-year and bottom line results. (“If your employees are healthy they’re going to work better and they’re going to cost the employer a lot less money”.)
