Readers young and old will find a welcome reminder of the power of magic and imagination in “Katherine's Winter Garden” (published by Balboa Press), the whimsical new children’s book by Lois Bardsley-Sirois.
Katherine is a young girl living in rural New England in the late 1880s. She’s in charge of maintaining an herb garden through the winter months, using herbal remedies to help her mother’s ailing health. The cold weather presents a challenge for Katherine until she receives some magical, mystical assistance to keep the garden alive through winter.
An excerpt from “Katherine’s Winter Garden”:
“Katherine’s eyes were fixed on the area beneath the pine branches. Sure enough … there was a flicker … then another as silent as a cat, she moved towards the lights. She went around the vegetable garden and neared the big pine. As she moved closer she could hear noises. Was it humming? Could they be voices?! The sounds were not clear. Now she crawled on her hands and knees so that she wouldn’t be noticed. It was hard to see but there was definitely something there.”
“Although this book was written with children in mind it touches on subjects that would appeal to teachers and parents as well,” Bardsley-Sirois writes. “It combines herbal remedies, imagination and unique characters to bring this story to a peaceful and joyful ending.”
