Patients who adhered to the Mediterranean Diet had a lower risk of hyperuricemia and its associated conditions.

The latest blog from health and medical website Healthfill.com titled “The Medierranean Diet’s Benefits for Older Adults” takes a look at a recent study from the Journals of Gerontology on health issues related to hyperuricemia.
Hyperuricemia is a condition characterized by elevated serum uric acid (SUA) concentration, not uncommon in aging adults. The study found that patients who adhered to the Mediterranean Diet had a lower risk of hyperuricemia and its associated conditions, including:
- Type 2 diabetes
- Metabolic syndrome
- Chronic kidney disease
- Cardiovascular death
Characterized by a high intake of vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, olive oil and whole grains, the Mediterranean Diet includes a moderate intake of wine, dairy, and poultry. Those who stick to the classic Mediterranean Diet have a low intake of red meat, creams, sweet drinks and pastries, resulting in lowered uric acid concentrations, thanks to the high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of the foods included in the Mediterranean Diet.
The study took place over the course of five years and examined more than 7,000 participants. None of the study participants suffered from cardiovascular disease, but they had been diagnosed with either type 2 diabetes, or were considered at-risk for coronary heart dieseast. The study found that those who consumed less than one serving of red meat daily have a 23 percent decreased risk of hyperuricemia. Additionally, the consumption of sofrito sauce and legumes further decreased hyperuricemia presence.
Seafood and excessive amounts of wine (more than seven glasses of wine per week) was associated with higher rates of elevated SUA, according to the study. The study also found that the Mediterranean Diet alone resulted in the reversion of hyperuricemia; weight loss and physical activity changes are not necessary.
