Members and guests of the NAPW St. Louis, MO Local Chapter gathered on January 14th for a professional networking meeting at Lewis Rice, a law firm in downtown St. Louis located at 600 Washington Avenue.
Guest Speaker Michelle A. Martin, CEO of AMM Empowerment, got the group of professional women talking about their own experiences in the workplace when she presented, “Diversity Issues Facing Women.”
The attendees participated in a lively networking session earlier in the evening as they ate their brown bag dinners and enjoyed delicious snacks provided by the meeting’s host Bridget Genteman Hoy.
At the conclusion of the networking portion of the monthly meeting, NAPW St. Louis Chapter President Lisa M. Pettis, Owner of REFORM, a personal training and health and wellness business, greeted the attendees and introduced the evening’s guest speaker.
“Michelle A. Martin was the guest speaker and shared her presentation, “Diversity Issues Facing Women,” which stirred up a great discussion among the group,” said Lisa.
Some of the issues covered in Ms. Martin’s presentation included the use of terms in the workplace, such as ‘gal’ or ‘honey;’ disparities in pay between men and women; the need to be mentored and to mentor others; and the importance of open and honest communication. Ms. Martin ended the presentation with action questions to encourage the women to move forward in addressing diversity issues in the workplace. The group of professional women engaged in more discussions on diversity, as the guest speaker continued to answer questions.
The Chapter President next invited Bridget Genteman Hoy, the Woman in the Spotlight for the month of January, to take the floor. Genteman Hoy delighted the women with the history of the Lewis Rice law firm, which began with a diverse partnership, stemming from Methodist and Jewish backgrounds. Ms. Genteman Hoy practices intellectual property and commercial litigation law, but said that she knows all of the lawyers in the law firm and can refer potential clients based on their needs. Ms. Genteman Hoy shared her military background in the U.S. Air Force and how much she learned during her service, her educational background, and her beginnings at Lewis Rice, which also included the birth of her two children.
“Bridgett shared many inspirational quotes by renowned women to encourage the women to forge ahead with their dreams and goals, as she had learned to do, while balancing career and home,” said the Chapter President.
Lisa presented a certificate to Bridget to thank her for sharing her experience as a lawyer and to Michelle, to thank her for sharing her expertise on diversity with the Chapter.
