The group of professional women networked and heard tips about being a female business owner from Wakeelah Mutazammil-Martinez, Co-Founder and C.E.O. of Wakee-Wornum International, LLC.
NAPW Wichita Local Chapter President Dawn Reed kicked off the meeting by welcoming all members and guests.
After the group of professional women had an opportunity to introduce themselves and share with the others one objective they have for 2013, Dawn introduced the guest speaker.
“Ms. Mutazammil-Martinez is here to generously share her experience of being a female business owner while conducting business in the United States, Malaysia, and Africa,” said the Chapter President.
After 30 years of circling the globe teaching Communication Studies at such institutions as Howard University, Morgan State University, and the University Putra in Malaysia, and facilitating organizational development and coaching executives in the U.S., Malaysia, and Africa, Ms. Mutazammil-Martinez now focuses her attention on sharing her passion for leadership development and human transformation in Africa.
She shared her insights on being a woman business owner with Wichita Chapter members and guests.
“There was such a wealth of information in what she shared, but most of it was focused on how we, as women, can be the best version of ourselves,” said Dawn. “She challenged us to consider how we view the events in life.
“Wherever there is a breakdown there is an opportunity to see something you have never seen before,” Ms. Mutazammil-Martinez told the crowd.
The guest speaker talked about how everyone needs to pay attention to their bodies, especially during a stress-filled moment.
“Your heart is the center of care and intelligence,” she said.
Her advice to the group of professional women was to learn emotional intelligence as it is an important tool. She finished her talk by advising members and guests to not undervalue themselves and their work.
“Value comes from what I already know about myself,” she said. “If you give your work away for free it is likely that others will not see value in it because you don’t. You must be in a value conversation…always!”
After the insightful and inspiring presentation, the Chapter President opened the floor to new business. She announced that the positions of Chapter Vice President and Event Planner were still open and also talked about obtaining NAPW t-shirts and baseball caps. Chapter member Jenny Grant is working with the President to getting items posted to social media sites such as, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.
“The Chapter will be hosting a booth at an upcoming community event, Spring Bling on March 16th from noon until 6:00pm. Everyone has generously signed up to man the table,” said Dawn.
The NAPW Wichita Local Chapter meetings are held on the first Monday of each month.
The next meeting will be on Monday, April 1st at the Green Mill Restaurant (Kellogg and Rock Road). The meeting will begin at 7:00pm for socializing and networking and the meeting will begin promptly at 7:30pm.
