At our firm, we support any efforts such as this one that raise awareness about building safety, in particular in an area as densely populated as New York City and northern New Jersey.

The safety of buildings in New York and New Jersey, including their construction and maintenance, must be a priority, personal injury lawyer Joseph A. Ginarte said today as he voiced support for awareness efforts during Building Safety Month this May.

“Everyone – including contractors, local officials and building owners – needs to work together to ensure that all structures are safe for the people who live, work, learn, shop and play in them,” said Ginarte, founder of Ginarte O’Dwyer Gonzalez Gallardo & Winograd, a personal injury law firm with offices in New York and New Jersey. “All parties need to make sure they understand laws and codes and follow them to the letter, while also using common sense to prevent accidents and injuries.”

The International Code Council (ICC) has declared May Building Safety Month in an effort to raise public awareness about “the need for adoption of modern, model building codes, a strong and efficient system of code enforcement and a well-trained, professional workforce to maintain the system.”

The campaign, presented by the ICC and its 50,000 members, aims to help individuals, families and businesses understand what it takes to create and maintain safe and sustainable structures.

“Many people don’t realize what goes into constructing and maintaining safe buildings. Campaigns like the International Code Council’s Building Safety Month help the public, as well the construction community, understand what’s needed to keep people safe,” Ginarte said. “At our firm, we support any efforts such as this one that raise awareness about building safety, in particular in an area as densely populated as New York City and northern New Jersey.”

The ICC’s Building Safety Month website includes downloadable tools for engaging in important safety areas. The ICC encourages corporations, government agencies, associations, nonprofits and others to support the safety month by:

  •     Hosting community outreach events.
  •     Making official proclamations.
  •     Sharing consumer education tips.

Resources on the website include strategies for setting up a Building Safety Month event, a fill-in news release, a sample proclamation and activity pages for kids.

“Education is a key part of ensuring that buildings are built right in the first place, following the proper codes and procedures, and maintained in a safe way going forward,” Ginarte said. “Awareness and education efforts like these help keep more people safe.”

Weekly themes for Building Safety Month include Fire Safety and Awareness, Disaster Safety and Mitigation and Backyard and Pool Safety. Pages on the ICC website highlight these themes, providing data on the types of accidents that can happen, as well as strategies on how to prevent accidents and how to respond if they do occur.

“Building safety is important,” Ginarte said. “The resources from the International Code Council give valuable information for construction companies and government entities, as well as citizens, on how to stay safe.”

But sometimes codes and procedures are not followed, and people are injured due to shoddy construction or poor maintenance. Ginarte said that people who have been injured in building accidents should consult with a qualified personal injury attorney, such as those at Ginarte O’Dwyer Gonzalez Gallardo & Winograd.

“Our firm has the experience to handle cases including construction injury and premises liability,” he said. “We know how to get victims of poor construction or maintenance problems the compensation they deserve.”
