New York, NY (PRWEB) April 11, 2013
A newly published medical study conducted by a team of trauma surgeons, emergency physicians and researchers from NYU Langone Medical Center had a number of surprising findings, said New York auto accident lawyer David Perecman. For one, researchers found that 44 percent of pedestrians hit by cars are struck while in the crosswalk crossing with the light, compared with 23 percent who crossed midblock and 9 percent who crossed against the signal, reported The New York Times (4.3.13).
“Pedestrian and cyclist safety is a recurring problem in New York. Apparently, no area can be entirely safe,” said Perecman.
Also surprising, overweight pedestrians hit by cars had less serious injuries than thinner accident victims, said The New York Times, reporting on the study’s findings. The researchers hypothesized that the excess fat may protect against injury.
Approximately 40 percent of cyclists injured were hit by taxis, while 25 percent of the pedestrians were. Researchers also found that the time of day can affect injury rates, reported the NYT.
Researchers studied more than 1,400 pedestrians and cyclists treated at Bellevue Hospital Center after collisions between December 2008 to June 2011. Most accidents occurred in Manhattan and western Brooklyn, said The New York Times.
The focus of the Bellevue report was on the patients. Data was obtained through victim self-reporting and combined with medical records and accounts from witnesses and first responders, said The NYT. Not included in the study were people who died before reaching the hospital.
The study could help transportation officials evaluate how best to reduce the types of injuries sustained in these cases. Administration officials said the report reflects the need for traffic-calming measures, like bike lanes and pedestrian plazas.
“The study can also help New Yorkers rethink their common assumptions about what keeps them safe while biking and strolling the streets,” said Perecman.
The results of the study were published in the Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery: April 2013 - Volume 74 - Issue 4 - p 1138–1145.
