NewsWatch, a nationwide television show, recently aired a news segment about Austin Chapman, a filmmaker who was recently fitted with a Phonak hearing aid. He can now hear for the first time in his entire life.
Austin Chapman was born profoundly deaf. He wasn’t able to hear or understand the music his friends were so moved by. Less than a few months ago, his frustration dissolved when he was fitted with a new Phonak hearing aid. For the first time in his life Chapman could clearly hear and comprehend music. But not just music – he was able to hear everyday sounds that we take for granted – the start of a car, the chirp of birds, or the rustle of the wind.
“I am only 23, but the hearing technology that has progressed over my lifetime has given me the opportunity to hear music for the first time, which I am forever grateful for,” said Chapman. “I was deeply affected by the support and encouragement of complete strangers when I shared my story online, and received more than 14,000 comments. I know there are others out there with similar experiences, and I am excited to create a short film and continue to share this inspiration."
Chapman's experience has inspired him to "pay it forward" and partner with Phonak to launch a contest to seek out others to tell similar stories about their own life-changing experience with hearing --for the first time or once again. The winner will receive a $25,000 prize and their story will be produced into a short film by Chapman.
