FOCUS on Diabetes is sponsored by the American Diabetes Association and is tailored to people of all ages who have diabetes or are at risk for diabetes. The expo will host workshops, educational mini-seminars, free health screenings, healthy cooking demos, fitness demos, and dozens of exhibitors offering hands-on product education and free samples. Celebrity chef Jamie Deen, son of Southern cooking maven Paula Deen, will also be on hand to discuss and demonstrate diabetes-friendly cooking tips.
People who develop type 2 diabetes typically were unaware they were developing the condition in the years leading up to a diagnosis. Called prediabetes, this condition occurs when blood sugar levels are high but not yet high enough for a diabetes diagnosis. Once a person has prediabetes, it can take anywhere from three to 10 years for the condition to progress to diabetes.
Prediabetes can be detected using an advanced blood test that measures several biomarkers associated with prediabetes, including blood glucose, hemoglobin A1c, C-peptide, C-reactive protein, homocysteine, and many other indicators.
Attendees who want to learn whether they have prediabetes can speak with PreDiabetes Centers team members at the expo to get more information on prediabetes screening and integrated, physician-directed treatment options. People who are unable to attend the event can sign up for a free screening at a local PreDiabetes Center or on the PreDiabetes Centers website.
